I know the Rose Festival is all old new, but I haven’t updated for a bit and I wanted to put up a few images from the festivities. The Starlight Parade has always been my favorite to photograph because of the dramatic night-time lighting.

The Other Festival
This year the Rose Festival Village opened on Memorial Day weekend. I took my family to the other festival going on that weekend: The Multnomah County Fair, the first of the Oregon county fairs going on at Oaks Park. There were things there that you could never see at the Rose Festival—like the dog jumping contest pictured above.
the 2009 Starlight Run
Last Saturday was the Starlight Parade, the first big event of Rose Festival. Like last year I photographed the race before the parade—the Starlight Run. Many people show up for this race if strange costumes (as demonstrated in my previous post) but many of the serious runners come to the front of the pack at the starting line, seen in the photo above seconds before the start of the race.
Starlight Run
The Rose Festival started this weekend. Next Friday is the nighttime Starlight Parade—Portland’s most fanciful parade. Directly before the parade is the Starlight Run—an evening foot race that follows the parade route. In the spirit of the parade, many participants dress in costume to make the race a more colorful event.
The picture above is from last year’s run. I’ll be photographing the race again on May 30th.
